The Bank of China, whose delegation at the prize presentation and banquet dinner was led by Deputy General Manager Ip Sio Kai, handed out 888,600 MOP (112,000 USD) to 12 sports for their achievements in 2018-2019.
The sports were: wushu, body building, karate, triathlon, bowling, cycling, muay, disabled sport, dragon boat, hockey, Special Olympics and swimming.
The event was organised by the Sports and Olympic Committee of Macau, China, in collaboration with the Sports Bureau of the Macau SAR government, Bank of China Macau Branch as patron and the Youth Committee of the Sports and Olympic Committee of Macau, China.
The highlight of the 2018-2019 term was Macau’s performance at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, where they won five medals - one gold, two silver and two bronze - in three sports: wushu (2), karate (2) and triathlon (1).
The gold was earned by Huang Junhua in the men’s nanquan and nangun. It was only Macau’s second gold medal in Asian Games history since their debut appearance at Beijing 1990.
The President of Macau NOC, Mr Charles Lo, thanked the Bank of China Macau Branch for their loyal support of the local sports scene.
“This year, 103 athletes from 12 sports received the award from the Bank of China Macau Branch and we are very grateful for their support of our athletes,” said Mr Lo, who is Chairman of the OCA Media Committee and a member of the OCA Executive Board.
“We hope they will use this money to improve and better prepare for the future. This was the first year of our Olympic cycle and Macau athletes are now preparing for the upcoming challenges.
“Our second gold medal in the Asian Games last year has been a big motivation for all our athletes.”
