Tokyo, Japan, December 13, 2019: The new President of the Japanese Olympic Committee, Yasuhiro Yamashita, has been nominated to be a member of the International Olympic Committee next year. The judo legend, who received the Outstanding Athlete trophy at the ANOC Awards in Doha in October, is one of three nominations to be submitted to the 135th IOC Session on January 10 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The proposals were made by the IOC Executive Board. In line with Olympic Agenda 2020, the candidates were selected by the IOC Members Election Commission, chaired by HRH The Princess Royal, taking into consideration several criteria in order to guarantee a balanced representation within the IOC Session. All of them have been subject to integrity checks conducted by the IOC Ethics Commission. IOC President Thomas Bach said: “These three personalities would bring a wide and varied set of skills and expertise that will be extremely beneficial for the IOC.” The list of candidates follows: Member whose candidature is linked to a function within an NOC or a Continental Association of NOCs: *Yasuhiro Yamashita, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) (Male, 1957, Japan) Members whose candidatures are linked to a function within an IF or a Continental Association of IFs: *David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) (Male, 1957, USA) *Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA (Male, 1970, Switzerland) The addition of the three new Members would bring the total number of IOC Members to 101.
