Kathmandu, Nepal, December 15, 2019: The Nepalese Government has announced that each Nepali gold medallist at the 13th South Asian Games will get a cash grant of at least Rs. 900,000 (around US$8,000). Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli met all the medallists and officials at his residence in Baluwatar last week, and lauded athletes’ performances at the regional sporting extravaganza in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur from December 1-10. Nepal won a record 51 gold medals, 60 silver and 95 bronze to aggregate 206 medals. It was the highest haul ever from a South Asian Games. Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Oli said the achievement of Nepali athletes was “historic” and they deserved all the honours. Oli said gold, silver and bronze medal winners in individual events would receive Rs. 900,000 (US$8,000), Rs. 600,000 (US$5,300) and Rs. 300,000 (US$2,650) respectively. Gold medal winners in team events will receive Rs. 500,000 (US$4,400) each. Oli added that athletes who bagged more than one gold medal would get an extra RS.200,000 (US$1,760) each. Swimming sensation Gaurika Singh won a record four gold medals while karateka Manday Kaji Shrestha, taekwondo athlete Ayasha Shakya and golfer Subash Tamang won two gold each. Nepal finished second behind powerhouse India, who bagged 174 gold medals. Sri Lanka finished third with 40 golds followed by Pakistan, 31, and Bangladesh, 19. Source: The Himalayan Times
