Bangkok, Thailand, November 3, 2019: Asia’s National Olympic Committees will have the opportunity to secure special funding for a pre-Olympic Games training camp next year thanks to the support of the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity.
On the first afternoon of the OCA/OS regional forum at the Arnoma Grand Hotel in Bangkok on Sunday, the NOC delegates from East Asia and South East Asia learned that 15,000 USD will be available for this project, beginning in January 2020.
The head of the IOC’s OS delegation at the forum, Olivier Niamkey, explained that this pre-Games training camp subsidy was a new source of funding for the NOCs. He said that one of the criteria was that the training camp must be held in a Japanese city endorsed by the Tokyo 2020 organising committee.
Mr Niamkey added that Olympic Solidarity – which distributes the TV revenue generated by the Olympic Games on behalf of the IOC – was providing a total of 46.7 million USD to make sure the world’s NOCs arrived prepared and ready for the Olympic Games. This includes funding for the Chef de Mission Seminar for team leaders, training camps and forums.
Another OS programme is athlete Olympic scholarships. At the moment, 1,552 athletes from 184 NOCs are under scholarship for Tokyo 2020 at a cost of 31 million USD, while a further 10 million USD supports 189 teams from 143 NOCs in the team support grant.
Other subsidies include 16,000 USD for each NOC for Games operations, for example team uniforms. After the Games, NOCs will receive 2,500 USD for each participating athlete – a total of 27.5 million USD reserved for the 11,000 athletes due to take part.
The afternoon session of the forum also included presentations on anti-doping, marketing and social media guidelines.
“We have had a very intense day and a lot of information; we hope it was useful,” said Mr Niamkey in his summing up.
The forum for East and South East Asia NOCs concludes on Monday before the forum for NOCs from West Asia, Central Asia and South Asia will take place from November 5-6.
