Doha, Qatar, October 17, 2019: The Olympic Council of Asia shared its successful past and its bright and busy future with delegates at the 24th ANOC General Assembly at the Doha Sheraton Hotel on Thursday afternoon.
The OCA’s Honorary Life Vice President, Raja Randhir Singh, made the continental association presentation on behalf of the OCA and said Asia had become a major sports destination of the world.
Doha itself had staged the IAAF World Athletics Championships and ANOC World Beach Games in the past three weeks alone, and Raja Randhir added that Asia would host the next Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020 and the next Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022.
He also informed the delegates of the five major multi-sport games on the OCA calendar: the Summer Games, Winter Games, Beach Games, Indoor and Martial Arts Games and Youth Games.
“Our next three games will be held in China in 2020, 2021 and 2022,” he said. “We wish them all great luck and we are sure they will present a very big image to the world of Asia holding the games.”
Raja Randhir congratulated Qatar on staging the ANOC World Beach Games at less than four months’ notice. “It is commendable - and congratulations for the wonderful job and putting up a great show.”
He also congratulated Qatar for winning a silver medal in the men’s 4x4 beach volleyball the previous evening.
The OCA video not only looked back on the successful 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, last year, when six world records and 86 Asian Games records were set, and also looked ahead to forthcoming events such as the OCA swimming youth camp in Doha next month, the OCA/Olympic Solidarity regional forums in Bangkok, also next month, as well as Olympasia construction projects and Sport For Peace activities around the continent.
The video highlighted the five events already on the OCA calendar through to 2026:
*6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China in 2020
*3rd Asian Youth Games in Shantou, China, in 2021
*19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in 2022
*4th Asian Youth Games in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2025
*20th Asian Games in Aichi/Nagoya, Japan in 2026.
