Doha, Qatar, October 15, 2019: Iran joined the gold medal club at the first ANOC World Beach Games in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday evening. The gold medal came in beach wrestling from Pouya Rahmani in the men’s +90kg category.
In the three-minute, first-to-three points bout, the Iranian dominated Ufuk Yilmaz of Turkey 3-0 with a trio of one-point scores.
The bronze medal went to Mamuka Kordzaia of Georgia.
The four medals on the second and last day of beach wrestling were won by Italy and Nigeria in the women’s events and by Georgia and Iran in the men’s competitions.
The gold medal moved Iran up the rankings and followed a silver medal in women’s karate – individual kata (forms) by Fatemeh Sadeghi.
Three Asian NOCs have now won gold medals at the ANOC World Beach Games: Japan (3 – sport climbing 2, skateboarding 1), Pakistan (beach wrestling) and Iran (beach wrestling).
The event concludes on Wednesday.
